Minimum Education
Standard:
Successful completion of two years of an acceptable post-secondary
educational program in computer science, information technology,
information management or another specialty relevant to the position
to be staffed.
NOTE: At the manager's discretion, an acceptable combination of
education, training and/or experience may serve as an alternative
to the minimum post-secondary education stated above. Whenever the
minimum education is met via this alternative, it is met for the
specific position only and must be re-assessed for other positions
for which this alternative has been specified by the manager.
Information
Technology Support/Analyst
Information Technology Support/Analysts at NRCan may be required to:
- Provide technical
assistance, services, training and advice to clients; provide client
support services such as Help Desk and computer installation at the
desktop; assist in network monitoring and security activities, assess
client requirements and propose solutions
- Design, develop,
integrate, document, install, test and maintain systems and applications
for data bases, networks and for software and/or hardware for one or
more technology platforms
- Assess client requirements;
analyze data and technical documentation; propose and implement solutions
- Write programs,
and produce/update documentation on application systems, functions,
or interfaces to facilitate systems development and implementation activities.

Information
Technology Specialist/Advisor
Information Technology Specialists/Advisors at NRCan may be required to:
- Plan, coordinate
and manage major projects, activities and implementation of specialized
IT services
- Conduct research
and feasibility studies of new technologies through direct liaison with
industry; develop prototypes, initiate and manage pilot projects to
test the effectiveness of the new technology in meeting client and organizational
requirements
- Write reports,
letters, and other documentation to transfer knowledge concerning the
technical and operational aspects of the service being provided
- Advise clients
on IT technologies, policies, procedures and standards; interpret and
disseminate central agency policies, standards and guidelines; provide
specialized expertise.

Computer
Systems IT Leader/Manager
Computer Systems IT Leaders/Managers at NRCan may be required to:
- Provide senior
level advice on service delivery and on the use of technology to enhance
business activities; approve the development of criteria for testing
new systems or enhancing existing systems and services
- Conduct cost/benefit
analysis and feasibility studies to evaluate proposed systems and make
recommendations to management; provide consultation to management and
clients on the effective use of technology; determine priorities and
deliverables, monitor service levels and evaluate against success measures
- Participate on
working groups and committees engaged in recommending solutions, options,
and alternatives for the enhancement of IT services
- Write reports,
letters, and other documentation to transfer knowledge, and prepare
presentations concerning the technical and operational aspects of projects
under development.
- A Director in this
position may be required to:
- Develop, promote
and present departmental IT strategies, initiatives and policies
- Organize and chair
client committees to discuss requirements, contribute to client satisfaction,
identify improvements, and provide direction/advice on implementation
of changes
- Represent the department
on strategic inter-organizational initiatives with central agencies,
other government departments, industry and others.
