Minimum Education
Standard:
Graduation with a degree in forestry or wood science from a recognized
university; or graduation from a recognized university with a degree
in a related science combined with acceptable experience.
Forestry
Liaison Officer
Forestry Liaison Officers at NRCan may be required to:
- Prepare and implement
forest management plans/strategies and organize and develop knowledge/policy
technology transfer initiatives in support of sustainable forest management
- Maintain an understanding
of forest research activities, forest policies and issues, and new technology
transfer approaches in forestry; report on trends in forestry policies
and related issues and practices; review literature related to science/technology
transfer/policy initiatives; provide scientific and technical advice
on technology transfer initiatives related to sustainable forest management
practices
- Provide information
and liaison services between the department and other organizations
- Represent the sector
on committees
- Manage technology
transfer/liaison projects; write technology transfer and/or strategic
forest and forest-related reports and documents; make presentations
on forest activities
- Negotiate partnership,
research, technology and cost recovery agreements with various agencies
to enhance the sector program support; manage special projects; manage
service, technical, liaison and scientific contracts
- Lead the work of
project activity teams and evaluate the performance of professional
staff, technicians, other employees and students
- Manage the human,
financial and technical resources of the project; counsel and evaluate
staff.

Forestry
Research Officer
Forestry Research Officers at NRCan may be required to:
- Conduct forest
research studies to advance knowledge and improve technologies through
application of known theories and practices; produce and present comprehensive,
authoritative reports on scientific findings and technological advances;
communicate results of research through publications in scientific literature,
reports, and presentations
- Plan research and
development activities in forest science, forest management and related
research studies in support of a science and technology (S&T) network;
develop new techniques and methods to address scientific problems
- Participate in
collaborative research activities with partners and clients; review
and evaluate scientific literature to maintain an awareness of policies
affecting forestry and forests, new research approaches and current
status of specific research
- Transfer technology
developed from research to client agencies
- Liaise with provincial/industrial
forest managers and other agencies regarding sustainable forest management
policies and practices
- Review scientific
papers submitted for publication; serve on editorial boards; participate
on review committees that advise on the direction of research projects
and on forest policy
- Coordinate and
supervise technical assistants and students allocated to the studies;
monitor work in progress and evaluate performance; manage the human,
financial and technical resources of the project.

Forest
Policy Analyst/Advisor
Forest Policy Analysts/Advisors at NRCan may be required to:
- Plan, organise
and lead components of forest policy development projects; recommend
objectives and outline project activities; evaluate the validity of
policy assessments and control the quality of the final policy product
- Collect and compile
data and information on public and non-government policies related to
forestry; conduct strategic analyses on aspects of regional, national,
provincial/territorial, individual/non-government organizations and
international sustainable forest management
- Review a wide range
of information, policies and practices; manage the development of an
area of expertise and the forest sector intelligence infobase; write
and present policy documents for discussion
- Apply expertise
to specific areas of forest policy; provide advice and expertise to
others on the development of strategic plans, positions, operations
and policy options
- Prepare policy
position papers and reports; organize policy development workshops,
seminars and meetings; present policy analyses
- Provide liaison
between the sector and representatives of provinces/territories, forest
industries and other non-government organizations, aboriginal groups
and international government agencies regarding specific policy issues;
negotiate agreements for exchange of information on Canada's forests
and related policy
- Represent the sector
on a variety of policy-related committees
- Develop communications
plans for bringing policy objectives and results to the attention of
others
- Facilitate the
development of approaches, policies and strategies which enhance forest-based
business and forest management in Canada
- Manage the human,
financial and technical resources of the program/project; counsel and
evaluate staff performance.
