- Appraise the scientific
content of narrative, statistical, and graphic documents, determine
inconsistencies in findings; correct/edit material based on own scientific
judgement; undertake research on trends and developments in scientific
presentation and on research methods and terminology
- Develop and maintain
systems and controls to monitor volumes and ensure quality standards;
provide advice on suitability, relevance and quality of author-submitted
graphics, text processing/layout, type styles and sizing of illustrations/tables;
prepare reports
- Provide advice
to science professionals on specifications for scientific content and
presentation, and on methods, techniques and practices to enhance the
logical development of scientific results and their communication to
both professional and general public audiences.

and Technology Policy and Planning Analyst/Advisor
Science and Technology Policy and Planning Analysts/Advisors at NRCan
may be required to:
- Conduct research
on science-based issues, trends,and initiatives within government/non-government
venues; examine existing policy/strategic business planning frameworks
and recommend program/policy/planning development strategies, priorities,
and evaluation methodology
- Plan and conduct
multiple analytical or research studies/investigations on diverse science-based
issues; develop hypotheses, methods, and techniques for the conduct
of studies and for the interpretation of science data; propose and implement
consultative strategies to gather inputs and research findings from
national and international sources; establish/lead internal/external
matrix teams or task forces; evaluate and recommend acceptance of team/task
force outputs
- Lead the development
of strategic science frameworks, the formulation of science-based policies/business
plans, establish and implement the mechanisms to harmonize multiple
and diverse science-based activities through consultations with internal/external
scientists/executives
- Develop preliminary
policy/business planning documents based on research, circulate to internal/external
clients for discussion; integrate inputs and provide recommendations
on approaches
- Develop, recommend
and implement the methodology and criteria to conduct cyclical and non-routine
assessments/audits of performance in policy/program/planning/R&D;
prepare evaluation documentation including opportunities for improvements
and/or proposing new policy/plan/R&D development directions; provide
an on-going source of advice on best practices
- Conduct discrete
policy/planning issues analyses and identify key factors/impacts; make
recommendations
- Evaluate major
science and technology related proposals/plans, conduct analyses related
to technological, socio-economic, environmental, public health impacts;
recommend on the value of science and technology related activities
to the delivery of departmental strategic goals and science mandates;
generate and negotiate formal documentation to implement major collaborative
science and technology related activities and recommend on resource
allocations
- Supervise staff
and/or lead teams of science and non-science professionals, plan activities,
establish information systems that support planning and policy development.

sources for data/software/hardware and/or systems enhancements, analyze
the utility of data and systems for scientific analysis, provide advice

Physical Scientists at NRCan may be required to:
- Plan and conduct
diverse studies and experiments within a project framework; set work
objectives/priorities; identify resource requirements; provide methodological
and subject-matter leadership; accept work products and assess performance;
propose/discuss new/modified project activities; provide specialist
input to policy development
- Direct and participate
in the development of hypotheses, methods, and techniques as well as
information technologies or instrumentation tools; establish internal
management procedures for the conduct of research in office, field and
laboratory environments
- Provide advice
to internal scientific professionals; act as a source of specialized
knowledge for stakeholders; produce research findings in internal reports
or publications; present findings in domestic and international venues
- Produce and present
comprehensive, authoritative reports on scientific findings and/or technological
advances
- Establish networks
to foster partnerships; negotiate work/financial relationships; provide
scientific leadership on methods, procedures and approaches
- Sit on committees/task
forces to represent portfolio interests; provide authoritative input
to strategic issues; make recommendations on the allocation of resources;
represent the department within domestic and international venues to
solicit collaboration, negotiate agreements, and/or influence legislative,
policy, technology or science directions
- Manage human, financial
and technical resources; direct staff; accept work products and assess
performance; approve proposals for external contractors, negotiate and
finalize statements of work; accept contractor outputs; exercise scientific
and financial authority over resources.
