      Minimum Education Standard:
      Successful completion of two years of post-secondary school training with acceptable specialization in statistics, accounting, economics, business administration, history, sociology, law-related field or some other specialty relevant to the position. NOTE: The manager may offer the following alternative: an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience. When the education qualification is met through such a combination, it is met for the specific position only.



Library Technician

Library Technicians at NRCan may be required to:

  • Perform descriptive cataloguing and classification of library material according to established policies, procedures and cataloguing systems; perform bibliographic searches using library automated systems and the Internet; make recommendations on the modification of internal procedures; perform interlibrary loans through existing library networks; process acquisitions and interact with publishers and suppliers to co-ordinate services and resolve problems; respond to reference enquiries; perform serials control; perform document delivery and circulation activities; perform financial transactions with clients
  • Coordinate and provide information services to clients within and outside the organization; provide advice on library issues and trends; promote information centre service delivery
  • Consult researchers and managers regarding acquisitions, collection development, library operations planning and management, and systems adaptation; follow-up and implement decisions
  • Select and acquire material for collection development, interact with publishers and suppliers to co-ordinate services and resolve problems; provide input to policy and guideline development; write and update operational manuals; implement and recommend the modification of internal procedures
  • Plan, manage and deliver an information centre program; interpret and review, develop and recommend amendments to policies and procedures; develop the library/information centre collection
  • Manage a budget and revenue collection activities, forecast budget requirements for future years, co-ordinate the purchase of equipment and supplies and provide reports on unit activities and budget utilization
  • Lead and supervise staff and contractors.

Toponymist

Toponymists at NRCan may be required to:

  • Format and enter names in the database; resolve discrepancies and record problem cases; ensure accuracy and consistency of information
  • Input new names and modifications on topographical/base maps; integrate provincial data on map updates; verify the accuracy of names used by others to identify and report discrepancies
  • Review and match geographical names information with federal, provincial and territorial agencies and with other geographical and topographical databases
  • Provide support services to and work with the Secretariat of the Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC) to develop and test new compilation formats for the database
  • Develop proposals for the Geographical Names Section database structure and content, collaborate with computer specialists to design and develop programs which extract data more efficiently.
  • An analyst in this position may be required to:
    • Analyze the functionality of the Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGCDB); report on data base performance; prepare recommendations for changes to its structure; test modifications to extraction, compilation and/or reporting applications; provide analytical and technical support to the GNBC; coordinate logistics, research agenda items, and formulate options for consideration by the committee
    • Conceive, modify and adapt policies, procedures and methodologies; create and maintain procedures manuals and other documentation.
  • A specialist in this position may be required to:
    • Develop and provide official national and international nomenclature for cartographic products and federal publications; write articles on toponymy issues and subjects; write and edit articles for government, public, national and international names organizations
    • Develop program and policy proposals relevant to the language treatment of geographical names and terminology
    • Plan and provide technical support to the meetings of the GNBC; interface with committee resource persons; document proceedings; advise on the status of various projects and on data exchange procedures
    • Participate in international meetings and conferences on toponymy; organize tours, demonstrations and talks concerning geographical names and the GNBC
    • Assign work, guide operational procedures, evaluate performance, identify training needs, and provide training to subordinate staff.

Statistical Production/Information Coordinator

Statistical Production/Information Coordinators at NRCan may be required to:

  • Manage the development, operation and standards for the quality of outputs from statistical collection, conversion, production and dissemination systems and processes; research, analyze, develop and implement systems and standards; provide advice to economists and industry clients; prepare complex graphics, tables and reports
  • Organize, plan and control systems support, database operations, statistical program production and/or data collection
  • Manage the collection, compilation and reliability assessment of data; establish systems and standards; manage the establishment and administration of large databases; manage the preparation of statistical publications
  • Evaluate requirements and changes in statistical needs; discuss standards and regulations; resolve data access, dissemination and management issues
  • Coordinate and respond to requests and enquiries for information; provide information and advice; participate in committees and working groups
  • Prepare and conduct information and training sessions; plan, manage and supervise the work of a statistical development/operations unit; establish objectives and project resource requirements; develop and present recommendations; plan, monitor and manage a budget; establish and manage interdisciplinary project teams.

Statistical Officer

Statistical Officers at NRCan may be required to:

  • Coordinate and participate in the planning, implementation and maintenance of manual and automated operations for the collection, editing, coding, tabulation, presentation, marketing and dissemination of statistical data
  • Use computer applications and databases to carry out statistical program operations; monitor, review and assess statistical program operations and results; produce regular and custom statistical tabulations and outputs
  • Select and develop presentation formats within established guidelines and practices
  • Provide advice to improve efficiency and/or quality of statistical production services; respond to requests and enquiries for data and information
  • Participate in the development/design of surveys
  • Evaluate information and statistics; analyze a variety of national and international data and statistics
  • Plan and organize the processing and/or retrieval of data; develop procedures for collecting, extracting and verifying statistics; participate in the development and testing of systems and/or databases
  • Assist project officers in the use of software programs; guide and supervise the work of students, junior employees and contract staff
  • Prepare reference and training materials for statistical program operations.

Modelling/Research Specialist

Modelling/Research Specialists at NRCan may be required to:

  • Develop, maintain and enhance a modelling structure capable of forecasting; undertake policy option analysis of resource issues
  • Conduct research and analysis on the tools required to obtain socio-economic data relevant to economic analysis and industry conditions
  • Coordinate statistical systems operations and maintenance, and provide expert advice on the use of software/hardware configurations for quantitative analysis
  • Organize data and develop models to collect, aggregate and analyze energy supply, demand and emission statistics, as well as natural resource and socio-economic data related to economic activity in all sectors of the economy
  • Provide advice to economists and policy analysts on the availability and performance of economic analysis models; collaborate with computer specialists in the development, configuration and integration of new or adapted programs, hardware and software.
