Free Data

Intuitive tools for users

  • The Atlas of Canada - a collection of maps and related information about Canada, with effective and intuitive tools for users.

  • Canadian Geographical Names Service - provides geographical names data to the public.

  • GeoBase - quality geospatial information at no cost and with unrestricted use.

  • GeoConnections is a national partnership initiative working to build the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI), which will make Canada's geospatial databases, tools, and services readily accessible on-line.

  • GeoGratis - a web and file transfer protocol (ftp) site that distributes geospatial data of Canada free of charge. Vector mapping data is available in scales ranging from 1:50 000 to 1:30 000 000 in a variety of file formats and several types of full resolution satellite imagery are available on-line.

  • National Topographic System of Canada - locate any National Topographical System map sheet number and its metadata.

  • Toporama - provides easy Internet access to free topographic images and low resolution Landsat 7 orthoimages of Canada that can be used by word processing or image software.

  • Learn how to download Landsat 7 images from GeoBase and by-products of Landsat 7 from the Centre for Topographic Information (CTI), NRCan. Download information. [PDF, 1.3 Mb, viewer]

Data purchases

  • National Topographic Database - comprised of digital vector data sets covering the entire Canadian landmass and includes features normally found on topographic maps; files correspond to two scales: 1:50 000 and 1:250 000.

  • Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED) - derived from the National Topographic Data Base (NTDB) digital files at the 1:50 000 and 1:250 000 scales, based on the divisions of the National Topographic System (NTS).

  • CanMatrix - is composed of raster data from scanned maps of Canada at the 1:50 000 and 1:250 000 scales. The files are geocoded according to the North American Datum of 1983.

  • CanImage - is an image composed of three spectral bands originating from resampled Landsat 7 orthoimages. They are chosen by the user based on the National Topographic System (NTS) at the 1:50 000 scale. This product is distributed in GeoTIFF.

  • National Airphoto Library - has over six million aerial photographs covering all of Canada. The Library indexes and stores all federal aerial photography for Canada, and maintains a comprehensive historical archive and public reference centre.
