Term: Total Power

Definition:

A quantity giving the total power received by the four channels of a polarimetric radar system.

Explanation:

The power received by a polarimetric radar can be expressed by the covariance, coherence or the backscatter Kennaugh matrices. The total power is proportional to the sum of the diagonal elements of these matrices. The total power has been called “span” in the radar literature, but its use in radar is not exactly the same as its mathematical meaning.

Total Power = SHH2 + SHV2 + SVV2 + SVH2
