Mandate

The Editorial, Digital Design, Sales, and Distribution sections sets the policies and standards, and provides comprehensive services for the editing, production, and sale of the Earth Sciences Sector (ESS) scientific and technical publications.

Responsibilities

In line with its mandate, the staff of the Section offers the following services:

  • oversees the publishing of scientific reports in a variety of formats (CD-ROMs, offset or on-demand paper products, diskettes, over the Web) within ESS;
  • operates a sales and distribution outlet that includes mail, fax, or e-mail orders and storefront sales of all GSC scientific-series output and related products;
  • sets publishing policies, styles, and standards for all ESS editors and oversees the production of a wide range of scientific output to ensure that all federal and departmental linguistic guidelines and identity requirements are followed;
  • provides ESS with comprehensive publishing services, including English and French scientific editing, desktop publishing, and printing and editing contract management;
  • acts as ESS liaison with Public Works and Government Services Canada and the Communications Branch in Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) on publishing and printing matters;
  • continues to research and develop e-commerce techniques to better serve clients;
  • manages the GSC open file system;
  • responds to requests regarding copyright permissions; and
  • co-ordinates translation services for scientific material, be it through the services provided by the Translation Bureau or through outside contracted sources.
