Canadian Wildland Fire Strategy

Federal, provincial, and territorial governments are developing a new way of managing wildland fires in Canada. The Canadian Wildland Fire Strategy (CWFS) Declaration signed in October 2005 by the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers addresses the challenges of wildfire to the safety of Canadians and the sustainability of Canada’s forests.

Enhanced public awareness of the role of fire and associated risk, recruitment and training of fire management personnel, and refurbishing of aging aircraft and equipment are some of the issues that the CWFS will address.

Approval of the Declaration was just the first step in a continuing process of cooperation to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of wildland fire management that will take place over the next several years.
