About EODS

A/EODS Service Manager: Caroline Cloutier

The Earth Observation Data Services (EODS) is a national service that provides Earth Observation data to Programs in the Earth Sciences Sector (ESS) of NRCan, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and Other Government Departments (OGDs), as well as to the Private Sector and other users.

EODS's data reception, dissemination and archive access services are provided through CCRS's two satellite stations at Prince Albert and Gatineau, utilizing state-of-the-art Earth Observation archiving, processing and dissemination systems. The Satellite Acquisition Services (SAS) group at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) in Ottawa provides the client interface for services to Government of Canada programs and to external clients.

The ground segment infrastructure of EODS is capable of receiving data for North America. The ground stations receive Earth Observation data from several satellite sensors and maintain archives dating back to 1972. Data are made available to support near-real-time applications such as forest fire monitoring and mapping, natural hazards and ice monitoring, and also non-real-time applications such as sustainable development, including land use management and climate change.

EODS Outputs:

  • Earth Observation data in support of ESS Program requirements;
  • RADARSAT-1, ERS and ENVISAT data to CSA; and ERS and ENVISAT data products to Canadian government users;
  • Provision of online access to the historical National Earth Observation data archives;
  • Generation of Metadata to GeoConnections, who hosts the Earth Observation data Catalogue, enabling discovery and access to National EO data archive;
  • Development of the RADARSAT-2 Ground Segment for the Canadian Space Agency (CSA);
  • Data distribution licensing;
  • Knowledge transfer to industry.

EODS Outcomes:

  • Canadian public and private sectors have easy, reliable access to new and archived EO data;
  • Contribute to CSA achieving its RADARSAT program goals through development and operation of CSA's RADARSAT ground segment;
  • Increased global competitiveness of Canadian Geomatics and Geoscience companies through creating value-added products and services based on Canadian and International satellite data.
