The NCC has been involved in numerous discussions with regional representatives and interest groups in connection with the deteriorated condition of the buildings at the Moore Farm estate. After conducting a conservation study on the stable and barn of the estate, the NCC is pleased to inform you that work to achieve the partial stabilization of the structures will soon begin.

The Moore Farm estate is located on Alexandre-Taché Boulevard, in the Hull sector of Gatineau. The stable and barn, which date from around 1910 and are recognized for their heritage value, are representative of the genteel working estates that arose on the outskirts of Canadian cities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Work related to the protection, safety and preservation of the stable and barn will be undertaken over the next several months. The work is intended to stabilize the buildings, eliminate water seepage and reinforce the structures.

The following stabilization and rehabilitation work is to be carried out:

  • installation of new roofs, doors and windows
  • repair and reinforcement of foundations and drainage
  • repair and reinforcement of the structures
  • restoration, replacement or repair of interior and exterior finish and woodwork
  • installation of a stairway to the second storey of the barn
  • connection of the buildings to municipal systems (sewers and water supply)
  • installation of a fire protection system
  • installation of lighting and (fire and security) alarm systems.

The work will be undertaken in phases, according to schedules that comply with municipal bylaws, between November 2005 and June 2006. The site will not be accessible to the public during the construction period.

The NCC is also conducting a historical study of the Moore Farm estate. The study will help to uncover certain aspects of the estate’s past and provide a clearer picture of how the estate, and its occupants, have changed over the years.

Reflection on the future role of the Moore Farm estate will be based on the studies currently under way and the sector plan developed in 1993. Consultations with the representatives of residents’ associations and interest groups will also help in establishing a new lease on life for the Moore Farm estate.
