Volunteer CentreHistory

The NCC has a national mission — to build and promote a great Capital for all Canadians. The NCC's volunteer program dates back to 1979, when 200 volunteers worked at the activities during Winterlude. The Volunteer Centre has grown over time into a well-organized, year-round effort.

Mission

The Centre’s mission is to involve the entire community to:

  • support and add to public programs developed by the NCC
  • offer volunteers the opportunity to experience the pleasure of helping to improve the quality of life in their region

Role of Volunteers

The NCC recognizes the great contribution that volunteers make to its work and the quality of life in Canada's Capital Region. Volunteers are invaluable in helping to build the kind of Capital that Canadians want, as well as to ensure that important national values, such as a sense of community, are alive and well in today's Capital.

Volunteers fill all kinds of roles to support the numerous NCC programs and activities, including those of hosts for VIP guests, information officers, flag distributors on Canada Day, ski patrollers in Gatineau Park, first-aid and lost-children helpers (provided by community groups), guides and gardeners.

Team

The Volunteer Centre Team is made up of four dynamic NCC employees who work to fulfill the Centre's mandate:

Recognition of years of service

Anniversaries at the NCC are recognized at the event or program volunteer-recognition parties. After 5 years of volunteer service, volunteers are called up in front of their peers at a party to receive a framed certificate or a recognition plaque. So, what is the difference? The difference is in the hours that you contribute per year. Here is the breakdown of the three levels of recognition :

  • for 1 to 15 hours of service per year, you will receive a card signed by NCC Chairman Marcel Beaudry, during National Volunteer Week;
  • for 16 to 24 hours of service per year, you will receive a framed certificate at a recognition party;
  • for 25 or more hours of service per year, you will receive an engraved plaque at a recognition party.
