Appliances - The EnerGuide Label

How Much Is Your Old Appliance Worth?

The short answer is, not much.

When you move that old fridge to the basement, you won't be plugging it into the wall, you'll be plugging it into your wallet.

The fact is, old refrigerators are not nearly as energy-efficient as new ones; if you are determined to move it to the basement, you should at least know what it's going to cost. Use the EnerGuide calculator to eliminate the guesswork.

Appliances manufactured between 1978 and 1993 were sold with round EnerGuide labels that reported monthly energy consumption.

Enter your old appliance's monthly kWh Rating:

(kWh per month x 12 = kWh per year)

Select your home province for the average electricity cost. Provincial electricity rates include all taxes.

(kWh per year x electricity cost = $ per year)

Type of appliance:

You'll do well to consider the final figure as an absolute minimum cost. The energy efficiency of an appliance tends to drop over time: gaskets become worn or loose, refrigerants dissipate slowly into the atmosphere and cooling coils gather dust, reducing their efficiency.

Remember, it is the second price tag that you'll pay every month for the next decade or two.
