Refrigerators - Buying Tips

Also look for the lowest EnerGuide rating when shopping for a refrigerator. The first step when buying a refrigerator is to select the right size (capacity) for your needs. A model that is too big wastes both money and energy, while one that is too small could waste energy if it becomes overcrowded with food and drinks. The following recommended sizes refer to the combined capacity of the refrigerator and freezer:

  • For three or four people, consider a unit of 395 to 480 L (14 to 17 cu. ft.)
  • For each additional person in the household, add 55 L (2 cu. ft.).

Allow enough space for good airflow around the sides, top and back of your new refrigerator for maximum operating efficiency. For low long-term operating costs, look for:

  • An "Energy Save" switch controlling heating coils in the cabinet; they prevent condensation in humid weather, but you should turn them off when the air is dry. Look for separate temperature controls for the refrigerator and freezer compartments that regulate the inside temperature to reduce food spoilage and save energy.
  • Easy-rolling wheels make cleaning easier; vacuum condenser coils regularly for maximum efficiency and compressor life.
  • Moving your old refrigerator to the basement? It's not a good idea. Find out why.
