Opportunities for Research
Study the present – Learn from the past – Explore the future

The PRF offers researchersAre you a researcher conducting forest-related research?
Are you interested in studying forest ecology?
Are you from the forest industry and looking for research solutions?

With its combination of history, experimental sites, and data, the Petawawa Research Forest (PRF) provides a unique opportunity for research. Each year researchers and their students can be found studying, measuring, observing, and learning from the forest.

We invite you to benefit from this legacy of scientific investment and partner with our team investigating climate change, biodiversity, sustainable forest management, ecological processes, environmental relationships, and tree genetics.

For the last 80 years, research conducted in the PRF has resulted in a wealth of data and experimental sites. The general forest and environmental data, along with information from years of field investigations, provide a solid foundation for future research and forest management undertakings.

Explore this Web site and ponder how the known site histories, the scientific data sets, the statistically sound, scientifically designed experimental sites can assist in meeting your goals. For example, say you were interested in forest succession after fire. We have sites where we know a fire occurred in the 1960s, the weather conditions at the time of the fire, the characteristics and intensities of the fire, and the pre- and post-burn stand conditions.

Need statistically valid results?

Take one of the PRF's scientifically designed experimental sites and layer your study with ongoing work. By using our sites, which have been replicated from 3 to 5 times, you save the cost of installing the plot infrastructure.

Looking for scientific data?

Browse our databases containing the Project Register and Binder Index. See if any of the past data sets can be applied to modern investigations. Trace the growth and development of a tree and its neighbors over the past 8 decades!
