IntroductionPrevious | Table of Contents | Next The 2002 Symposium was somewhat different from any other one organized in the relatively short existence of the National Council of Visible Minorities - NCVM. After 4 years of spirited efforts, the organization is entering a state of maturity. Every one of the 3 days was filled with expectations, passion and, most importantly, with a strong feeling of conviviality. More than 550 individuals attended the event and they came from all six regions of the country: Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, National Capital, Central and Western. This Symposium was a collective effort to bring to the forefront issues that are important and close to visible minority members. It was a good opportunity to assemble a true picture of the membership and test the level of commitment needed to convey the vision and the mission of the Council. We have heard members express their hesitations and concerns on issues of representation, progression and a bias-free workplace environment. Expectations are running high and the national and regional executives who have accepted the new challenge will have to stay close to their constituents in the months to come. Members want accountability not only from senior management but also from their national and regional executives. The new Board will follow-up on the recommendations and seek pertinent solutions and concrete results on term employment, representation, retention, career progression and corporate culture change. The 2002 Symposium will also have a positive impact for years to come. The continuing support from all the major stakeholders is very encouraging and on behalf of the National Board, I want to express to all participants, our sincere gratitude and the promise that we will stay focused on NCVM’s objectives. We are not alone in the quest to make the Federal Public Service a better place for Visible Minorities. |
