Diesel Emissions Laboratory at CANMET-MMSL

Diesel Emissions Laboratory

The Diesel Emissions Laboratory forms part of the CANMET Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories, Underground Mine Environment Program. The program operates a state-of-the-art diesel emissions testing facility located on the grounds of Natural Resources Canada's CANMET research facility at the Bells Corners Complex in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Established in the early 70's, the Diesel Emissions Laboratory's role has evolved over the years to provide diesel engine emissions expertise for mines and testing services for off-road diesel engines and emissions control technologies.

Diesel Engine Emissions Testing and Certification

The primary role of the Diesel Emissions Laboratory is to provide diesel engine type certification and testing to the following standards:

  • CAN/CSA M424.1-88 for coal and other gassy mines;
  • CAN/CSA M424.2-M90 for non-gassy mines; and
  • MSHA 30CFR Part 7 non-permissible diesel-powered equipment, design and performance requirements.
The Diesel Emissions Lab can provide dual U.S. (MSHA) and Canadian (CSA) testing for mining diesel engines. An approved engine will be issued a certificate containing mine ventilation requirements specific to that engine. The ventilation "prescription" is derived from the emissions data collected during the approval process testing. Mines can use the ventilation prescription to assist in planning and effecting diesel emissions control.

Specialized Services

The Diesel Emissions Laboratory provides independent expertise in support of Natural Resources Canada and other government-sponsored projects and initiatives. Past and present projects include the Diesel Emission Evaluation Program (DEEP) Filter Project, DEEP Light Duty Vehicle Project, IRRST Hybrid Vehicle Project, and the Mine Automation Program.

The Diesel Emissions Laboratory can also provide confidential contract services to the private sector. Past private sector clients have included engine manufacturers, emission control system manufacturers, and mining companies.

Testing Facilities

Natural Resources Canada has invested heavily in developing the Diesel Emissions Laboratory into a world-class testing facility, fully equipped to perform complete emissions mapping of modern heavy-duty and light-duty diesel engines for off-road and mining applications.

Publications and Reports

The Diesel Emissions Laboratory has several on-line documents relating to testing, certification and diesel emissions monitoring in general.
