Preferential sulfide oxidation through galvanic interaction is an important metal leaching mechanism often ignored in the acid rock drainage literature. Without giving due consideration to this natural weathering mechanism prevalent in mixed sulfide assemblages, mine operators may be unpleasantly surprised with unexpected occurrences of metal leaching at some stage of a mining project.
