Overview

The CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory (CANMET-MTL) is unique in having the capability to cover the complete materials cycle, from materials selection, fabrication, in-service performance and characterization to prototype product development. CANMET-MTL's strength lies in its people, a carefully recruited team of expert scientists and technicians who have made outstanding contributions to science and technology and in its complete range of special-purpose scientific equipment.

CANMET-MTL delivers its portfolio of research projects through the efficient and effective deployment of its research personnel, through a judicious selection of project delivery policies and practices, and through a matrix management structure. CANMET-MTL's group leaders ensure smooth operation and focus on building capability in both expertise and facilities. Their challenge is to maximize the potential of the intellectual and physical capital, with which they are entrusted, to achieve the demands placed on the groups by the research portfolio. CANMET-MTL is also a test centre for non-destructive testing personnel.

With its unique mix of facilities (an experimental casting laboratory, a pilot-scale rolling mill, formability testing equipment, corrosion testing, mechanical testing, and an extensive array of characterization facilities), it is possible for CANMET-MTL to investigate a wide variety of materials including metals and alloys (steel, aluminum, magnesium, copper, nickel, zirconium, etc.), metal matrix composites, intermetallics, coatings, ceramics, concrete and some plastics. We can simulate manufacturing processes like casting, rolling, stamping, forging, drawing and welding, as well as advanced manufacturing processes such as metal powder injection moulding.
