MONCTON (CNB) - Public Health services were informed today that laboratory testing has confirmed the presence of Norovirus in several stool samples from cases linked to the Mount Allison University outbreak that has to date affected nearly 300 individuals.

"This is consistent with our working diagnosis," said Dr. Denis Allard, the regional Medical Officer of Health in Moncton, "and confirms our initial suspicions, based on the clinical course presented by those ill."

In view of the dwindling reports of new cases, of which there were none reported today, Public Health has agreed with Mount Allison University officials to allow a gradual resumption of social gatherings and sporting events on campus, while maintaining a high level of personal and environmental hygiene.

"While the bulk of the outbreak appears to be behind us, it remains necessary for a few more days to keep up our guard and continue to observe good hygiene, the principal means of preventing the spread of this type of virus," Allard said.
