National Satellite Initiative Program Description
The National Satellite Initiative is helping to lower the cost of
broadband access for communities in the Far to mid-north, and in
isolated and remote areas of Canada, where satellite is the only
reasonable means of providing broadband access. Launched in October
2003, this $155-million initiative is one more step toward meeting the
Government of Canada’s commitment to ensuring broadband access for all
Canadian communities. The National Satellite is being delivered through
several rounds, the first of which closed January 22, 2004. Future
rounds will be announced over the next several months.
This unique satellite solution will help provide access to essential
services in areas like health care and education, using tools such as
videoconferencing and tele-surgery. It will also bring economic
opportunities. The National Satellite Initiative is a joint project
between Infrastructure Canada, Industry Canada and the Canadian Space
Agency.
