Proposal Development, Submission,
and Review Process

Proposal Development

Prior to submitting an application, you must:

  • Select the Theme Area representing your area of interest and contact the CANMET-MTL Theme Leader about your proposed project.
  • Develop your proposal with a CANMET-MTL Contact.

Step 1: Select your Theme Area and contact your CANMET-MTL Theme Leader

Proposals for access to the Academic User Access Facility (AUAF) at the CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory (CANMET-MTL) must be made in one of four Theme Areas: Steel, Lightweight Metals, Concrete, or Emerging and Composite Materials. Please choose the Theme Area most closely representing your area of interest and send a brief note to one of the four CANMET-MTL Theme Leaders. Your message should briefly describe (5-10 lines) the nature of the access you are seeking, the scope of the work involved, and the requirements for access. You may send this note via e-mail (strongly preferred; click on links below), fax, or postal mail.

If you are uncertain which Theme Area is most appropriate, contact the AUAF Administrator.

If you are sending your note by fax or postal mail, please ensure that you specify the name of the CANMET-MTL Theme Leader corresponding to your area of interest (or AUAF Administrator).

Fax:

Academic User Access Facility
Attention: [CANMET-MTL Theme Leader's name]
Fax: 613-992-8735

Postal mail:

Ottawa, Ontario
CANADA K1A 0G1

Following receipt of your note, the CANMET-MTL Theme Leader will contact you and provide the name and contact information of the most appropriate CANMET-MTL research scientist, hereinafter referred to as your CANMET-MTL Contact.

Step 2: Develop your proposal with your CANMET-MTL Contact

You will work in collaboration with your CANMET-MTL Contact in preparing your application to ensure that the proposed work is feasible and that the budget is based on realistic estimates of the scope of the project. Before discussing or corresponding with your CANMET-MTL Contact, you should review the Research Proposal Application form (available here in html, MS Word, or PDF [to view the PDF file, you will require Adobe Acrobat Reader software offered free of charge by Adobe]).

Travel Funds for Graduate Students
Limited funds are available from Natural Resources Canada to assist graduate students participating in the research to travel between their universities and CANMET-MTL. Requests for travel assistance should be included in the application and accompanied by a justification. Preference may be given to students travelling from locations furthest from the CANMET-MTL User Access Facility. Recipients of these funds will be required to produce original receipts and to follow Treasury Board Travel Guidelines.

Proposal Submission

Following consultation with your CANMET-MTL Contact, you are ready to complete the Research Proposal Application form and send it to CANMET-MTL.

Step 3: Complete and send your Research Proposal Application form to CANMET-MTL

To submit your application electronically as an e-mail attachment, download the application form in Microsoft Word (MS Word required).

To submit your application by fax or postal mail, or if you do not have Microsoft Word, download the application form in portable document format. Print the downloaded file and complete the application using a typewriter.

Step 4: Send your completed Research Proposal Application form to the AUAF Administrator

E-mail:
Send your completed Microsoft Word file as an attachment to the AUAF Administrator.

Fax:
Send your completed form to the AUAF Administrator at:
CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory
Natural Resources Canada
Academic User Access Facility
Attention: AUAF Administrator
Fax: 613-992-8735

Postal mail:
Send your completed form to the AUAF Administrator at:

Attention: AUAF Administrator
568 Booth Street

All applications will receive an acknowledgment of receipt.

Proposal Review

Upon receipt of your proposal, it will be reviewed by one of four Theme Review Committees. Each Theme Review Committee is chaired by an Academic Theme Leader:

Theme Review Committees will name reviewers for each proposal received. Proposals will be reviewed for their scientific merit, technical feasibility, and to decide if the scope of the requested access is appropriate. Applicants should expect to be informed about the status of their applications within three weeks of receipt of their application. If the proposal is accepted, a Notification of Acceptance will be sent to the applicant, a budget will be assigned, and the work will be scheduled in consultation with CANMET-MTL management and personnel. The travel funds allocated to a project will be included with the Notification of Acceptance.
