Mining in the Arctic
7th International Symposium

CANMET Mineral Technology Branch

The 7th International Symposium on Mining in the Arctic was held in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, from March 29 to April 1, 2003. The symposium was hosted by the International Arctic Mining Advisory Council, whose annual chair was Dr. J.E. Udd, Principal Scientist, CANMET Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories (MMSL) of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and organized through the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). Seventy-five participants from Canada, Russia, the United States, Norway and Denmark attended the symposium.

The symposium covered topics such as mineral exploration, mineral economics, mine development, regulatory issues, working with Aboriginal people, mine environments, environmental impacts and mine closure. NRCan, through CANMET-MMSL, was proud to be one of the sponsors.

The participants were welcomed during two banquets by Mr. Oleyak Akesuk, Minister of Sustainable Development of Nunavut, and by Mrs. Nancy Karetak-Lindell, local M.P. and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources. Two unique events of the symposium were the opening of two sessions to local public, with simultaneous translation in Inuktituk, and a special session organized by the World Wildlife Fund of Canada on Landscape Planning in the Canadian Arctic, chaired by Dr. Richard Haworth, Assistant Deputy Minister, Minerals and Metals Sector, NRCan.

CANMET-MMSL staff presented a total of six papers on topics ranging from on-line monitoring to mine decommissioning to surface environment. Falconbridge Mine Raglan staff provided a fantastic field trip on March 28. The 8th Symposium will be held in 2005 at Apatity, Kola Peninsula, Russia.
