Organization's Role in Public Safety

The Privy Council Office is the Prime Minister's department and the Cabinet Secretariat coordination and support to the departments and agencies of the government.. It provides non-partisan advice on a wide range of social, economic, fiscal, national security and foreign and defence policy issues.

Key Public Safety Activities

The Prime Minister has particular responsability for national security. On his behalf, the Privy Council Office:

  • supports ministerial decision-making on security and intelligence matters, helping departments and agencies bring forward security and intelligence issues for ministerial discussion or approval;
  • coordinates the security and intelligence activities of all Canadian government departments and agencies and promotes effective international intelligence relationships;
  • assesses key international issues and events affecting Canada's interests;
  • provides advice on national security and foreign intelligence matters, including major policy developments, public issues, crises and community priorities;
  • cooperates with provincial and territorial governments and the private sector on such issues as how to protect Canada's critical information infrastructure;
  • works with other countries and with international organizations such as the G-8 and the Organization of American States on shared concerns, such as organized crime and terrorism.
