Organization's Role in Public Safety

  • Support the Minister of Justice in working to ensure that Canada is a just and law-abiding society with an accessible, efficient and fair system of justice
  • Promote respect for rights and freedoms, the law and the Constitution

Key Public Safety Activities

  1. Public Safety and Security
    • Anti-Terrorism Act (Bill C-36) designed to ensure that authorities have the tools needed to protect Canadians from terrorism
    • Criminal Code amended to help law enforcement officers and prosecutors disable and dismantle criminal organizations
  2. Youth Justice
    • Youth Justice Renewal Initiative launched with an aim to establishing a fair, effective youth justice system in Canada
    • Ensure that young offenders face meaningful consequences; improve the rehabilitation of young offenders; and prevent youth crime
  3. Crime Prevention National Strategy on Community Safety and Crime Prevention
    • Promote the integrated action of key governmental and non-governmental partners to reduce crime and victimization
    • Increase public awareness of and support for effective approaches to crime prevention
    • Assist communities in developing and implementing community-based solutions to problems that contribute to crime and victimization, particularly as they affect children, youth, women and Aboriginal people
  4. Gun Control
    • Carry out important policy work in the development of Canada's Firearms Act which requires the licensing of all firearms owners and the registration of all firearms
    • Legislation works to make communities safer by keeping firearms away from those who pose a danger to themselves, to their families or to the public
    • Firearms safety education and awareness are key aspects of this initiative
