Organization’s Role in Public Safety
- Coordinates and promotes search and rescue in Canada
Key Public Safety Activities
- Coordinating the federal elements of search and rescue, working in particular with:
- Department of National Defence (Canadian Forces)
- Department of Fisheries and Oceans (Canadian Coast Guard)
- Office of the Solicitor General (Royal Canadian Mounted Police)
- Parks Canada
- Transport Canada, and
- Environment Canada (Meteorological Service of Canada)
- Working directly with the provincial and territorial search and rescue authorities, including the police
- Developing and standardizing search and rescue service across Canada in the provinces and territories
- Conducting major studies and reviews including:
- Producing search and rescue prevention information
- Publishing SARSCENE magazine
- Organizing the annual SARSCENE workshops
- Coordinating the Canadian contribution to the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite alerting system, and
- Monitoring and maintaining the standards of the Canadian registry for personal locator beacons
- Managing the New Search and Rescue Initiatives Fund
- Providing annual funding for new projects or initiatives that will improve search and rescue in Canada
