National Defence

Organization's Role in Public Safety

  • To formulate and manage all aspects of defence policy, defence policy is jointly developed with DFAIT, PCO and other departments
  • To develop and retain people to effectively support the CF in operations and meet the defence mission
  • To man combat and support elements to enable Canada to meet its objectives in time of peace, crisis or war
  • To generate and maintain combat capable, multi-purpose, sea, land and air forces to meet Canada's defence objectives

Key Public Safety Activities

  1. New Public Safety Act
    • An Act to amend certain Acts of Canada, and to enact measures for implementing the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention, in order to enhance public safety
  2. Military Justice System
    • Seek to ensure public safety and the observance of important societal standards
  3. Conflict Management Project
    • To create an environment within the Department of National Defence and Canadian Forces that embodies and promotes a safe and comfortable workplace that treats everyone with respect and dignity
  4. Communications Security Establishment
    • Acquire and provide foreign signals intelligence
    • Provide advice, guidance and services to help ensure the protection of Government of Canada electronic information and information infrastructures
    • Provide technical and operational assistance to federal law enforcement and security agencies
  5. Defence Research and Development
    • Contribute to the success of military operations by pursuing Research and Development (R&D;) activities that provide improved support, knowledge, protection, and response to potential threats
    • Enhance the preparedness of the Canadian Forces by assessing technology trends, threats and opportunities, and by exploiting emerging technologies
    • Facilitate and enhance the ability of decision makers to make informed decisions on defence policy, force generation, and procurement by providing expert scientific and technological (S&T;) knowledge
