CBRN Research and Technology Initiative
Since the chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear
(CBRN) Research and Technology Initiative (CRTI) was launched in May 2002
as the federal science community's response
to providing science solutions to CBRN terrorist threats, it has been very successful in building linkages among
non-traditional partners and across organizational boundaries. These new communities
have increased Canada's knowledge and preparedness for countering CBRN threats by
working together on a common mission.
Many of the science and technology (S&T;) projects have already begun to deliver results
and many more are well on their way to completion. The laboratory clusters have
enhanced their capability base with upgraded equipment, facilities, and training.
Now CRTI must turn to strategies for sustaining this capacity.
As Canada plans for international events, such as the Vancouver Olympics in 2010,
CRTI must maintain a proactive focus to prepare against the risks of CBRN attacks.
While CRTI is constantly striving for the implementation of maturing S&T;
capabilities, the development and adoption of best practices and
knowledge, and the operational readiness of the federal S&T; community, 2008
offers an important "lead mark" to be even better prepared for CBRN events
well in advance of a significant international event such as the Olympics.
Working together, the nation's science and operational communities will
continue to play their parts in protecting the security of all Canadians.
