After the Shaking Stops

Wait for 60 seconds after the shaking stops before you move. Aftershocks can be almost as violent as the earthquake and damaged structures could fail and collapse during a minor aftershock.

Use common sense and visual and audible clues to determine the condition of the building. Look for distorted walls, windows, doors or openings in the wall connections. Listen for the sound of running water or calls for assistance. Do you smell smoke or natural gas?

Do not attempt to walk through a building with out first putting on a pair of shoes with thick soles. Shoes that cannot be punctured by debris such as broken glass. Keep a pair of shoes at your work place and under your bed, along with a flashlight.

Account for members of you family. Call to them first to see if they need assistance. Meet at your designated MEETING SPOT. Attend to the injured and assist them leaving the building if it is necessary.

If you are in your car, visually check your surrounding for hazards before you get out. Look for things like downed power lines, fallen debris.
