Helmet Safety
Research from the Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto has shown that provinces in Canada that have adopted mandatory bicycle helmet legislation have found a significant reduction in the number of bicycle-related head injuries in children and youth (News from The Hospital for Sick Children, November 4, 2002). Ontario has a mandatory bicycle helmet law that requires children under the age of 18 to wear a bicycle helmet (Highway Traffic Act of Ontario).
It is important as a parent, or for people working with children, to role model positive safety habits. If you wear a helmet (and other protective equipment) while participating in activities such as cycling, it reinforces this important behaviour to children.
