Alzheimer Wandering Registry...

"When a loved one wanders, help is at hand."

Alzheimer Disease is a degenerative brain disorder that destroys vital brain cells. It most often occurs in people over 65, but can strike adults at any age. Currently, more than 1/4 million Canadians are affected by Alzheimer Disease.

Alzheimer Disease is not a normal part of aging and it is not just memory loss. The disease usually begins with small changes in a person's behaviour and memory. Eventually, it affects all aspects of a person's life - the ability to think, understand, remember, communicate and perform simple tasks.

While each person experiences different symptoms, some behaviours are common. Wandering is a typical behaviour exhibited by people with Alzheimer Disease.

Wandering & Alzheimer Disease

Many individuals who have Alzheimer Disease like to keep moving. They may be focused on going to a particular place, or roaming aimlessly. This movement is referred to as wandering and can happen during the day or night. Sometimes, the behaviour leads the person outside, where traffic, bad weather and unfamiliar surroundings can lead to danger.

Caregivers can help reduce dangerous wandering by offering the person a safe place for continuous movement. Exercise and other activities can also be helpful, keeping the person busy and using restless energy.

Registering the individual with the Alzheimer Wandering Registry can also provide peace of mind.

Safely Home Alzheimer Wandering Registry

The national Alzheimer Wandering Registry was developed by Alzheimer Canada with the RCMP. The program is designed to help individuals with Alzheimer Disease return home safely following an episode of wandering.

When an individual is registered, vital information about him/her is stored confidentially on a police database. Should an individual be found wandering or reported missing, the information can be accessed by police anywhere in Canada.

Registration is voluntary. For a one time fee of $35, the Alzheimer Society provides an identification bracelet, a Caregiver Handbook and ID cards.
