Background
Kanaweyimik Child and Family Services Inc. provides a
family violence program for the Battlefords. The program meets the needs of victims,
children, offenders and their families who are caught up in the cycle of family violence.
It targets Aboriginal people who are experiencing problems with family violence, as well
as serving non-Aboriginal people who are in crisis and seeking support.
Program Objectives
- Create a safe and nurturing environment for Aboriginal
children and families;
- Use Elders as role models who will offer experience and
guidance to clients;
- Create an awareness of the dynamics of family violence and
its impact on children and families;
- Establish support services such as counselling and support
groups for families experiencing family violence;
- Use traditional Aboriginal practices such as healing circles
in individual and group therapy; and
- Incorporate traditional family values and practices into the
program.
Services Offered in 2002/2003
- Individual and family counselling;
- Referrals to other services;
- Informing community leaders about conditions that affect the
wellbeing of the community; and
- Informing the community about the services offered by the
family violence program.
Program
Organization and Management
The program employs a family violence counsellor who
reports to the executive director of Kanaweyimik. The program attempts to build good
working relationships between the courts, other agencies and the Kanaweyimik program.
