Passenger transportation

Public transit is essential to Québec’s socioeconomic wellbeing. That’s why the Ministère des Transports makes mobility and safety a priority, notably through infrastructures, equipment, and road safety.

The Department oversees a number of financial aid programs (french) in the public transit sector. In 2003–2004, its contribution reached $257.4 million, in addition to the amounts allocated to school bus transportation, which has been administered by the Ministère de l'Éducation du Québec since April 1988. The Ministère des Transports divided its $257.4 million among municipalities, and transit and paratransit throughout Québec. The Department also regulates certain aspects of public transit and taxi services.

To best serve all Quebecers, the Department now ensures that air and maritime links are maintained with outlying regions of the province (Moyenne and Basse-Côte-Nord, Îles-de-la-Madeleine, and Nord-du-Québec). It owns 23, eight heliports, and eight ferry crossings for this purpose.
