Everyone wants a safe, reliable road network. That is why the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) devotes sizable resources to road maintenance. But we need you, as an owner of roadside property, to work with us. How? Simply by preserving the road corridor1, especially the right-of-way.

Infractions

Permits

  • Trucking (special permits and weight certificates)
  • Riparian owners (people living on property bordering on a road or a body of water that is owned by the department)
  • Operators (gravel pits, technology parks, automobile scrap yards, etc.)
  • Use of the public thoroughfare for special events

Matters regarding the issuance of transport permits (bulk, general or specialized) and the registration of heavy vehicles are under the jurisdiction of the Commission des transports du Québec.

Claims

Contact the Transports Québec office located closest to the structures or infrastructures involved in the incident from which the claim arose.

Road network

  • summer maintenance

  • traffic control devices and roadway advertising
  • Roadside Advertising Act
  • lighting of the Department network (traffic lights, street lights)
  • air traffic control operations, railway signalling and visual aids to navigation

Questions related to maintenance, repair, speed limits, traffic lights and street lights in the local network are under the jurisidiction of the muncipalities.

Freight transportation

Expertise and information on:

Matters concerning air traffic, pilot licences, and the inspection and return of vehicles are under the authority of Transport Canada.

Passenger transportation

Matters related to driver's licences, vehicle registration, mechanical inspections of vehicles, weighing stations and road checks, passenger road safety and claims concerning bodily injuries in accidents are under the jurisdiction of the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ).

Matters related to the transportation of school children are under the authority of the Ministère de l'Éducation du Québec.


Retour au texte.1 A road corridor is a strip of land that varies in width, depending on the type of setting it passes through and the various elements taken into account. It includes, in particular, the right-of-way and the roadway within it, private entrances, advertising signs and lots adjacent to or near the road whose presence or use may have a more or less direct influence on traffic and the safety of road users.
