The Rendez-vous in Gaspé event represented a key component of the
Government of Canada’s regional intervention strategy. Born out of the idea of
organizing an activity in conjunction with members of the federal
interdepartmental committee of the Gaspésie – Îles-de-la-Madeleine region, the
endeavour snowballed. Rendez-vous in Gaspé was unique in being a regionally
organized pilot project that embraced two strategies of economic development.
The first focused on the business community, through its Business Contact component,
while the second focused on strategy targeted the general public through its
Community in Action component. This was the first time an event of such
magnitude was held in the Gaspé region!
On June 6 and 7, 2003, visitors were free to select from among
some 40 different activities, including conferences, workshops, roundtable
discussions and demonstrations, organized around themes such as science and the
environment, culture and heritage, natural resources, organic farming, tourism,
entrepreneurship and innovation. Approximately 50 specialists representing some
20 Government of Canada departments and agencies were present on the event’s
Business Floor to provide individual participants with advice and with answers
to their questions.
Various organizers also contributed to the success of the event,
including the Gaspé CFDC, Canada Economic Development, the Department of
Fisheries and Oceans, the Canadian Rural Secretariat, plus many regional
partners.

The Business Contact reception and welcome centre provided
entrepreneurs with the information they needed and served to guide them through
various aspects of the event.
