Dead Bird Surveillance

What Can I Do To Help?

With the arrival of colder temperatures, our 2006 West Nile Virus control program has now ended. As of Friday 29 September 2006 we will no longer be picking up dead birds. If you would like to report a dead bird sighting, please call 1-866-673-4781.

Dead birds will be the first possible signs of the West Nile virus in Ontario. The City of Ottawa, Public Health and all other health units across the province, need the public's help to be on the watch for dead birds of concern.

Dead birds of concern will be collected and a limited number will be sent to Guelph for testing.

If you find the carcass of a Blue Jay, Raven, or Common Crow, phone the City of Ottawa at 613-580-6744 ext. 26138. Please leave your name and number. Someone will call you back about the specific details. Only dead birds of concern will be collected. Pick up will usually be by the following day. Up to four a week will be examined for the possible presence of West Nile virus.
