Over the last 10 years, despite the extent to which the virus has spread throughout the world, fewer than 250 cases of human infection have been reported (as of May 15, 2006). Most of the reported cases are in regions where humans live in close contact with birds and where slaughtering and removal of feathers are done by hand.
