Economic portrait of fisheries and aquaculture in the Îles-de-la-Madeleine

Luc Boucher, Economist, has worked in the fisheries industry for 10 years, the last five with Fisheries and Oceans Canada. For the past four years, he has been sectoral program manager for the Îles-de-la-Madeleine office.

Conference summary:

The fishery is the dominant economic feature of the Magdalen Islands. The conference described  the importance of this industry to the local primary and secondary sectors by highlighting the catches, processing and labour associated with it.

 

An operational network of commercial fishing harbours

Guy Descôteaux is Special Project Manager and the person responsible for the Harbour Authority Program at Fisheries and Oceans Canada. With the department since 1985, he has been with  Small Craft Harbours since 1987.

Conference summary:

Fisheries and Oceans Canada invests in active commercial fishing harbours to support the fishery and aquaculture. These investments inject considerable funds into the local economy.

 

Role and services of the Société de développement de l’industrie maricole (SODIM)

Denis Lévesque is Assistant Director of Administration and Finance for SODIM.

Conference summary:

This conference, “Improving the economic future of the Maritime regions by cultivating the sea”, presented the history, goals and vision of the Société de développement de l’industrie maricole (SODIM), outlining how it operates, the products and services it offers, the territory it serves and its involvement in the development of Quebec’s maritime regions.

 

Tax harmonization in the Maritime regions

After earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration (accounting) from the Université de Moncton in New Brunswick, Donat Thériault started his career with the Canada Revenue Agency I May 1977 as a business auditor. He worked with tax services for eight years. In 1986, he moved to Rimouski to head the business audit team.

Claire Thibault has been with Revenue Quebec since 1973, specializing in commodity taxes. She  was a research officer and a customer service information officer before taking up her current  postion as a commodity tax auditor.

Conference summary:

The conference dealt with the following:

  • an overview of sales tax legislation
  • requirements regarding the contents of vouchers
  • tax exemptions
  • how to deal with suppliers or clients in another province, especially those that do not have a QST number
  • all the specifics relating to taxes on the purchase of new or used trucks
  • the difference in taxes between businesses that are incorporated and those that are not
  • distinctions specific to fishers.
