Dangerous Goods Inspector

Group & Level: TI-05 or TI-06 (TI = Technical Inspector)

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must fully demonstrate in their application that they meet all of the minimum qualifications.

Education:

  • Secondary education (or PSC approved alternatives) combined with extensive and relevant experience in a related field

Experience

At a minimum, you must possess the following experience:

  • Regulatory enforcement OR
  • Working within the Aviation Industry OR
  • Recent experience in handling, offering for transport, or transporting dangerous goods OR
  • Giving training on regulations AND
  • Using computers and general office software

Other requirements of the job:

  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence
  • A willingness to travel and work overtime
  • A valid pre-placement medical assessment as prescribed in the Occupational Health Assessment Guide for Dangerous Goods Technical Inspectors
Citizenship:

For the Dangerous Goods Safety Inspector position only Canadian Citizens are allowed to apply in our inventory.

Functions:

Within Transport Canada, the Civil Aviation Safety Inspectors - Dangerous Goods are responsible for promoting the uniform understanding of and compliance with these regulations as they apply to air transport.

There are approximately 24 Civil Aviation Safety Inspectors - Dangerous Goods across Canada whose job it is to:

  • Audit and inspect air operators (Canadian and Foreign)

  • Audit and inspect shippers and freight forwarders who handle, offer for transport, transport or import dangerous goods by air

  • Conduct investigations of alleged air related violations of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, 1992

  • Implement enforcement actions including proceeding with prosecution action, and detention of dangerous goods

  • Approve Air Operator Dangerous Goods Chapter of the Operations Manuals and the Air Operator Transportation of Dangerous Goods Training Programs

  • Conduct Public Awareness activities.

About the Organization:

Each shipment of Dangerous Goods represents to some degree, a threat to life, health, property, and/or the environment unless appropriately prepared for transport. The Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations establishes the conditions under which these commodities can be safely transported by air, road, rail and/or marine.

These Inspectors are located within the Commercial and Business Aviation Branch of the Civil Aviation Directorate of the Safety and Security Group. The Civil Aviation headquarters directorate determines program contents, policy and standards, while the regions deliver the program.
