If I have a problem with my credit card or debit card - what should I do?
Contact your card provider FIRST - Provide them with all of your information. The card provider will then give you instructions on what you should do next.
Call Police - Provide as much information as you can. Be sure to include your home branch or card company information along with the card number. Ottawa Police will provide you with a case number that you can then give to your card company.
Credit Cards and Debit Cards are the property of the issuing card company. The card provider is responsible to assemble the required documentation that is needed for criminal investigation purposes. Ask your bank or card provider to forward your case to their Corporate Security Office for investigation. Request that they secure any video that may exist and hold it for investigation purposes.
Bank and Credit Card Statements
The Ottawa Police Service Organized Fraud Section encourages the public to check monthly bank and credit card statements.
The public is encouraged to keep a close watch on their incoming bank and credit card statements.
It is important to be aware of the purchases you make and to report any discrepancies immediately to your card company. It is equally important to ensure that you are receiving your statements in a timely fashion and that your address information is up to date whenever you move.
