Crystal meth report gives 83 recommendations
September 19, 2006

After consulting with Albertans, the Premier’s Task Force on Crystal Meth has put forward 83 recommendations to fight the growing problem of crystal methamphetamine in Alberta communities.

The report focuses on the best ways to:

  • keep people from starting to use crystal meth
  • get treatment and longer-term support for those who become addicted
  • get crystal meth off the streets by going after drug dealers and producers

The recommendations cover a wide range of issues, which fall under fall under six themes:

  • taking a province-wide approach
  • prevention
  • healing and treatment
  • getting tough
  • supporting Aboriginal communities
  • improving services and assessing results

They include:

  • giving children a healthy start
  • engaging communities
  • increasing detoxification services, treatment and after care
  • providing education
  • strengthening laws and the courts

The Government of Alberta will now consider the best way to carry out the recommendations. Some, such as website prevention strategies, street and drug intelligence teams, and detoxification and treatment, build on work already being done and can be more easily adopted.

Other recommendations require policy or legislative change or collaboration between ministries or other levels of government. Alberta has been active in lobbying for changes to federal legislation and will consider these recommendations when pushing for stronger criminal law.

The Premier’s Task Force on Crystal Meth was announced in October 2005. Its purpose was to build on work already being done and to champion, review and advise on government strategy. In addition to awareness, prevention, treatment and healing, the task force considered legislation, enforcement and environmental concerns as part of its overall strategy.
