MINISTER PETTIGREW TO ATTEND

UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew will be in New York from September 13 to 21, 2005, to attend the United Nations’ 2005 World Summit and the opening of the 60th session of the UN General Assembly. Minister Pettigrew will deliver Canada’s address to the General Assembly on the morning of September 21, 2005.

“Leaders from around the world will gather this week in New York for a historic world summit, during which they will discuss development, security, human rights and UN reform,” stated Minister Pettigrew. “In addition to addressing these questions, I look forward to working with my counterparts on regional issues including Haiti, the Middle East peace process and the Great Lakes of Africa peace process.”

While in New York, Minister Pettigrew will participate in a number of bilateral meetings with foreign ministers and in meetings of the Human Security Network, the G8, the Commonwealth and other multilateral groups.

The Minister’s trip will conclude with his participation in the opening of the Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty on September 21. He will deliver a statement at the conference reiterating Canada’s support for the treaty and urging the remaining 11 states whose ratifications are required to act without delay.
