CANADA CALLS FOR CALM IN ECUADOR

Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew today issued the following statement expressing concern about the grave political situation in Ecuador:

“Canada calls on all sectors of Ecuadorian society to abide by the principles of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, to fully respect constitutional order and the civil rights of its citizens, and to avoid any actions that may lead to further violence. We urge all citizens of Ecuador to remain calm and to resolve the current crisis through peaceful dialogue.

“At this stage we have no information to indicate that any Canadian citizens in Ecuador are in danger. All appropriate measures to safeguard their security have been taken by our embassy in Quito, and we will continue to monitor the situation in the days ahead.”
