PROPOSED REAPPOINTMENT TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF
EXPORT DEVELOPMENT CANADA
International Trade Minister Jim Peterson today announced the proposed
reappointment of Paul Gobeil as Chair of the Board of Directors of Export Development
Canada (EDC). Mr. Gobeil’s proposed reappointment will be forwarded to the Standing
Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade for review.
“Paul Gobeil is an excellent asset to Export Development Canada,” said Minister
Peterson. “As Chair over the past two years, he has provided valuable service to
Canadians through EDC.”
Prior to his appointment in January 2002 as Chair of the EDC Board, Mr. Gobeil was a
Cabinet Minister in the Quebec National Assembly (1985 to 1989); Chair of the
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Advisory Council (1996 to 1998);
Co-Chair of the Board of Directors of European Aeronautic Defence and Space Canada
Inc.; and Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of Metro Inc. (October 1990). From 1974
to 1985, Mr. Gobeil held senior-level positions at Provigo Inc., Loeb Inc. and IGA
Canada Ltd.
Mr. Gobeil has also chaired the boards of Royal Trust Company, Bankers Trust
Company, Hydro-Québec International and Domtar Inc. He currently sits on the boards
of several other companies, including the National Bank of Canada and the Canam
Manac Group Inc.
EDC is a Crown corporation devoted exclusively to providing trade finance services to
support Canadian exporters and investors in some 200 markets, 130 of which are in
developing markets.
