Canada-Dominican Republic Relations

Beginning of Diplomatic Relations

Canada and the Dominican Republic celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2004. Since 1954 when the official diplomatic relations were established, Canada's bilateral ties with the Dominican Republic have significantly grown stronger. In 1999, in recognition of the wide range of existing links, Canada and the Dominican Republic increased their level of reciprocal representation. Canada upgraded its diplomatic representation in the Dominican Republic from Chargé d'affaires to ambassador level. The Canadian Embassy in Dominican Republic successfully promotes the development of political, trade, investment, economic and cultural relations between Canada and the Dominican Republic.

Dominican Republic‘s membership in the United Nations and the Organization of American States (OAS) is certainly an important factor in developing closer relations with Canada.
