Special Summit of the Americas Mexico: January 12-13, 2004

Canada participated in the Special Summit of the Americas in Monterrey, Mexico, January 12-13, 2004. This event, which was proposed by Canada last year, was convened to provide the Leaders of the 34 countries of the hemisphere with the opportunity to address current political, economic and social challenges which have arisen since the April 2001 Quebec City Summit.

The Special Summit addressed three key themes:

• economic growth with equity
• social development
• democratic governance
