CANADA WELCOMES PEACEFUL AND DEMOCRATIC
TRANSITION IN INDONESIA
John Manley, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific) Dr. Rey Pagtakhan today welcomed the
peaceful and democratic process which led to the confirmation of Megawati Soekarnoputri as Indonesia's fifth president.
"I am pleased that the appointment of President Megawati Soekarnoputri seems to have been accepted by Indonesians and
to be in keeping with the country's constitution," said Mr. Manley. "I hope the Indonesian people and the new government
will now work together to address the serious economic, humanitarian and political challenges facing their country."
"Canada encourages a peaceful government transition in Jakarta," said Dr. Pagtakhan. "We will continue to support
democratic development, good governance and human rights in Indonesia."
The Canadian Embassy in Jakarta will continue to closely monitor the situation in Indonesia and provide information to
registered Canadians. There are no reports of Canadians being injured in recent demonstrations or bombings.
