CANADA CONDEMNS TERRORIST ATTACK IN TEL AVIV
John Manley, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today condemned yesterday's terrorist attack
at a discotheque in Tel Aviv, which killed 18 and injured more than 100 others. He
called for an end to the terrorism and violence in the region and for both sides to work
with renewed vigour and urgency to implement recommendations in the Mitchell Report.
"I condemn this outrageous act of terror," said Mr. Manley. "Today I conveyed to Israeli
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres Canada's condolences to the families of the victims and
to the people of Israel. I also expressed my concern to Palestinian Minister Dr. Nabil
Shaath that terrorism and violence must end."
Mr. Manley also called on both sides to exercise restraint and avoid any escalation of
violence at this juncture. He underscored that an immediate and lasting cease-fire is the
essential first step toward a return to the negotiating table.
Finally, Mr. Manley welcomed the denunciation of the terrorist attack in Tel Aviv issued
publicly by Chairman Arafat as well as his personal commitment to do all in his power to
end the violence and implement the Mitchell Report. The Minister added that all sides
need to move forward following this tragedy toward a just and durable peace settlement.
