DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER MANLEY - VISIT TO AFGHANISTAN

Media representatives are advised that John Manley, Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, will visit Afghanistan on January
25, 2002, to meet with officials of the newly formed Interim Administration, discuss upcoming challenges, and assess the
situation on the ground first-hand. This visit concludes a nine-day trip to the region.
In Kabul, Mr. Manley will meet with the Chairman of the Interim Administration of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,
Hamid Karzai, and United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who is also on an official visit to the region. In addition,
the Deputy Prime Minister will visit a demining project at the Kabul airport to mark the significant contribution that
Canadians are making toward ridding the country of anti-personnel mines. Mr. Manley will also visit a CARE Canada
project, funded by the Canadian International Development Agency, which distributes food to Afghan widows.
