MINISTER PETTIGREW MEETS WITH HIGH-LEVEL
DELEGATION FROM EUROPEAN UNION
Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew will meet today with Bernard Bot, Minister of
Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and President of the Council of the European Union
(EU), Javier Solana, Secretary-General of the Council of the EU and High
Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, and Richard Wright,
representing European Commissioner for External Relations Christopher Patten, on the
occasion of the biannual Canada-EU Transatlantic Dialogue Meeting.
“Both the European Union and Canada share the belief that we have important roles to
play in developing effective multilateral approaches to confront the challenges facing
the international community,” said Minister Pettigrew. “In partnership with the EU, we
are focusing on areas of concrete concern, such as Afghanistan, Sudan, Iran and
Bosnia, where we can benefit from a coordinated approach.”
The report of the High-Level Panel on United Nations Reform, expected in December of
this year and commissioned by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and The
Responsibility to Protect, the final report of the International Commission on
Intervention and State Sovereignty, are also expected to figure prominently in the
discussions.
