MANLEY - UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Media representatives are advised that John Manley, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will be in New York from November 10 to 14, 2001, to attend the
56th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Minister Manley will deliver Canada's address to UNGA on Saturday evening,
November 10. Canada's focus at this year's General Assembly will be effective multilateralism and the campaign against terrorism.
On Sunday, November 11, Mr. Manley will attend the opening session of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) Entry into Force
Conference which seeks accelerated ratification of the Treaty banning nuclear test explosions. He will deliver Canada's address to the CTBT
Conference on Monday. On Sunday evening, the Minister will attend the G8 Foreign Ministers' dinner where discussions will focus on finalizing a
G8 action plan on anti-terrorism.
On Monday, November 12, the Minister will meet with foreign ministers of the Human Security Network, a cross-regional group of 13 countries, to
adopt a Joint Statement on the Terrorist Attacks of September 11 and to discuss the Network's 2002 priorities. In the afternoon, he will attend the
Canada-EU Transatlantic Declaration Ministerial meeting, which will focus on international security and enhancing Canada-EU cooperation. Mr.
Manley will also meet with counterparts of the Rio Group Troika.
While in New York, Minister Manley will also hold various bilateral meetings. These will include meetings with Secretary-General Kofi Annan,
Special Envoy for Afghanistan Lakhdar Brahimi, and foreign ministers from Mexico, Russia, Pakistan, India and Egypt.
